DHL Stormers legend: Percy Montgomery

Percy Montgomery made his mark for the DHL Stormers as one of the original superstars.

Percy Montgomery finished up with 102 Test caps and 893 points for the Springboks but, especially among the Western Cape’s rugby public, he is as much celebrated for his contribution to the DHL Stormers.

Montgomery made his Super Rugby debut for DHL Western Province during the 1996 season in a team that featured the likes of Joel Stransky and Justin Swart.

Over the course of a 13-year career, Montgomery played more than 300 first-class matches, including stints in Wales with Newport (2002-2005), the Hollywoodbets Sharks (2005-2007) and Top 14 contenders Perpignan (2007-2008) before returning to Cape Town in 2009 for his DHL Stormers swansong.

The tactically-astute fullback with the monster boot was a poster boy for the DHL Stormers during the famous Men in Black era when he starred alongside Breyton Paulse, Corné Krige and Bobby Skinstad in the first South African team to qualify for a home semifinal in 1999.
